Research Focus

I am researching the effect of cell-cell and cell-matrix communication of the ability of tumors to be resistant to chemotherapy. Currently, potential drugs are screened by testing on cells cultured in the conventional 2-D manner. By recreating a more in vivo like microenvironment in vitro, the ability to better test potential chemotherapeutic agents prior to performing animal testing would be possible. To do this, I am developing a heterotypic cell culture technique where both tumor cells and fibroblasts are cultured together within a 3-D hydrogel to allow for drug testing on cells cultured in a manner which better recapitulated the in vivo microenvironment.

I am currently a junior in Biological Engineering.
